What’s all this about, then?

Here you’ll find essays about a variety of topics, because I have ADHD and there’s no way I can settle on just one niche.

But Is It Art is a monthly series of stories that look at the bigger picture of art and design. But Is It Art topics include things like architecture, animation, sculpture , graffiti, advertising, destruction, and more - both contemporary and historical.

Science Shapes is also a monthly series. It’s a narrative snapshot of scientists and the impacts of their work. Science Shapes looks at historical and current scientific work and the people who do it.

The rest of the time essays will be a mix of cultural tidbits and personal stories and thoughts. Sometimes funny, usually meaningful, hopefully always interesting!

Who am I, anyway?

I’m still figuring out the answer to that question, but here are some basic facts about me.

I’m a writer and a single mother, and I live in Aotearoa New Zealand with my 12 year old son and our little dog. I have a degree in anthropology and I work full time in communications. The rest of the time I’m probably listening to podcasts while renovating furniture, reading, learning new things to write about, and watching too much Netflix or TikTok.

Support me and my writing

I’ve been writing for a long time, and I’m now working on putting out consistent, quality essays. Subscribing and reading really helps, sharing your thoughts in the comments is brilliant, and a paid subscription helps me to put more time into producing great writing.

I am working towards buying a house, which is incredibly difficult in this market and with a single income, so 100% of my writing income from this newsletter and any freelance work I do will go towards a house deposit. So thank you especially for your paid subscription!
